Carbonvia wasn't born as a startup hunting for a market: it started as the internal tool of an Italian steel importer that had to close its own CBAM quarters — and couldn't find anything that spoke its language.
First we had the problem ourselves: customs declarations to transcribe, default values to chase through the Commission's PDFs, an ETS price that changes every quarter, the finance team asking "how much do we set aside?". Then we built ourselves the tool. Then we realised that every importer around us had exactly the same problem — and that the alternatives were a €6,000-a-year service based on default values or an Excel spreadsheet.
So the tool became a platform. With the things inside that you only learn by doing: that the weight sits in box 38 and not box 35, that the handwritten notes on the customs declaration matter more than the printed text, that your Indian supplier sends the data over WhatsApp, and that the EU default is a ceiling — not a destiny.
